DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) – Ambetter health insurance customers in Alabama may begin seeing refund checks arrive in the mail. The refunds are tied to federal requirements that limit how much insurers can spend on administrative costs compared to medical care.
Ambetter’s 2025 transparency notice for Alabama confirms that overpaid premiums can be refunded either electronically or through mailed paper checks, depending on how members originally paid. Customers who paid by paper check are more likely to receive their refunds in the mail, while those who used automatic or online payments may receive direct electronic refunds. However, WDNews was informed by a Dothan Resident they received a check in the mail, although all payments were made electronically. Their rebate was $643, it is my understanding that the checks can vary drastically.
The rebate process is part of the Affordable Care Act’s “medical loss ratio” rule, which requires insurers to spend at least 80 percent of premiums on medical services and quality improvements. If they fall short, they must return the difference to policyholders…
