Alabama lawmakers, doctors to hold news conference to celebrate new statewide law

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Bipartisan lawmakers and Alabama physicians are set to hold a news conference on Tuesday, September 30 to celebrate the implementation of Alabama’s new presumptive Medicaid eligibility law for pregnant women.

The law, effective October 1, aims to expedite access to prenatal care for low-income expectant mothers during the critical early stages of pregnancy.

It permits Medicaid to cover outpatient medical care for pregnant women for up to 60 days while their Medicaid applications are processed. Proponents of the law believe it will help reduce Alabama’s maternal and infant mortality rates, which currently exceed the national average…
