Man Charged with Capital Murder in Fatal Stabbing of Retired Auburn University Professor

Auburn, AL – Harold Rashad Dabney III, of Montgomery, has been charged with capital murder for the brutal killing of Dr. Julie Schnuelle, a retired Auburn University professor emerita. Schnuelle, beloved by her veterinary community, was found dead in Kiesel Park on September 6, 2023, after being stabbed seven times and dragged into a wooded area.

The Incident: Stabbed and Left to Die in Kiesel Park

According to Auburn Police, Dr. Julie Schnuelle was attacked while walking her dogs around 9:38 a.m. in Kiesel Park, a popular walking spot in Auburn. She was allegedly stabbed in the neck, chest, forearm, and hand, leaving two pools of blood on the trail.

After the brutal assault, Dabney allegedly dragged Schnuelle’s body 25 to 30 yards into the woods, leaving her leash soaked in blood and other personal items, including her visor and phone, behind. Schnuelle was discovered later that afternoon by a passerby, who called 911 around 1:54 p.m.

Law enforcement officers arrived and began investigating, with the detective at the scene noting blood stains and evidence of a struggle on the walking trail before they found her body behind a tree.
