Alabama sheriff’s offices warn residents about phone scams

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Multiple sheriff’s offices across North Alabama are warning residents about ongoing phone scams targeting local communities. Officials say scammers are calling people, claiming to represent law enforcement or bail bond companies, and demanding money to avoid arrest or resolve supposed legal issues.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office says one common scam involves callers posing as a local bond company and requesting payment to release a loved one from jail. Officials caution that legitimate bonds require paperwork in person and that money sent over the phone is gone for good. Sheriff’s deputies advise residents to verify any claims, hang up on unexpected calls, and contact the company directly.

Madison County Sheriff Kevin Turner said scammers are using fear and urgency to trick people, often asking for gift cards, wire transfers, or personal banking information for fake legal matters like missed jury duty or unpaid fines. ““Let me be very clear, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office will never call to demand payment or say you’ll be arrested. These scammers are very sophisticated and will use fear and urgency in order to trick people, and they’re good at it. If you get a call like that, hang up and give us a call directly.”…
