MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Following public outcry, including from Montgomery’s mayor and police chief, that one of the suspects in the city’s recent mass shooting was released on bond, Montgomery County’s district attorney is seeking to a way to bring about his rearrest.
The suspect, Javorick Whiting, 19, was arrested on Thursday and charged with one count of attempted murder during the Oct. 4 downtown shooting that left two dead and a dozen others injured. Whiting’s bond was set at $60,000, which is currently the maximum, and he was later able to post bail and walk free from the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
During a Monday news conference, Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed and Montgomery Police Chief Jim Graboys shared their frustrations, with Reed calling the release “a slap in the face” to the victims and the community and Graboys urging lawmakers to expand Aniah’s Law to cover not only attempted murder charges but all violent crimes.
