As the government shutdown continues, Montgomery families may soon feel the strain with expected cuts to SNAP benefits starting Saturday. Local food pantries are preparing for an increased need.
“We’ve already started preparing by making more bags of food for our next ministry giveaway, which is this coming, Wednesday, Nov. 5, and I’ve had several calls. I’m expecting more families to come on that day,” says Lou Ann Raughton, Executive Director of the Community of Hope Ministry.
“We acquire a lot of our food through the Heart of Alabama Food Bank, and that’s such a blessing, but the demand is somewhat greater than the supply,” Raughton said.
