Alabama wants to give teachers a raise next year. But that could come at a cost: rising premiums for their health insurance.
State superintendent Eric Mackey said he is “very concerned” about rising costs and a budget shortfall in the state’s teacher insurance program, PEEHIP. He warned this week that tough decisions might be needed as officials try to balance goals for educator pay and benefits.
“I know that the governor is closely looking at the possibility for pay raises right now, and her team’s working on that, but at this time I don’t think that I can say very much about whether that might happen,” Mackey said…
