Nonprofit buys historic Ben Moore Hotel, galvanizes preservation push

After decades of vacancy and lukewarm revitalization attempts, the future of the historic Ben Moore Hotel finally has direction.

As the Advertiser previously reported, on Jan. 30, the property was listed on several real estate sites for $419,000. In November the building was purchased by The Conservation Fund, an organization that describes its purpose as “buying at-risk land with high conservation value to protect it from degradation.”

“One of the greatest human rights campaigns began inside the walls of the Ben Moore,” said Phillip Howard of The Conservation Fund. “If the conversation is civil rights and the African American experience, you can’t speak without one of the first words being ‘Montgomery.’ If that’s the case, you can’t start that conversation without the Centennial Hill community.”…
