State Board approves K-12 digital literacy and computer science course of study

The Alabama State Board of Education on Thursday unanimously approved a new K–12 digital literacy and computer science course of study, outlining what students will learn as computer science instruction is implemented statewide.

The approved coursework establishes learning objectives across grade levels and provides a framework for schools as they prepare for statewide implementation.

Schools will begin voluntary implementation next year, followed by required implementation during the 2027–28 school year.

While Thursday’s vote approved the course of study, the requirement for high school students to complete a computer science course for graduation was established previously.
