MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WHNT) — The 2026 legislative session is under a month away. The State Board of Education and others are sharing their greatest focus when it comes to what Alabama schools need next year.
Alabama State Superintendent of Education Eric Mackey said paying for educators’ health insurance is a big focus. He explained there are questions about how funding can be increased for other programs with rising health care costs.

Mackey said he is asking lawmakers to allocate $50 million toward adolescent literacy.
“Early literacy and mathematics–we’re gonna continue to drive those things,” Mackey said. “Those are what matter. We’ve got to get the basics right before we can build on the basics. So we’re gonna continue to push those things in the next session.”…
