Alabama judge to serve 50 years in prison for abusing office, stealing taxpayer money

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. — A former criminal judge in Alabama now finds himself on the other side of the judicial system, after a jury found him guilty of living a lavish lifestyle on the taxpayer’s dime.

Former Eleventh Judicial Presiding Circuit Judge Gilbert P. Self was sentenced to 618 months in prison after his conviction on a long list of corruption charges.

Those include 15 counts of abuse of public office, one count of lying to the Examiners of Public Accounts and one count of first degree perjury…
