MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — A pre-filed bill for the next legislative session could change the amount of money communities get from sales tax.
This comes as Tuscaloosa and other cities have sued the state over how online tax dollars are distributed. Bills by Sen. Greg Albritton (R-Atmore) would allow people to opt out of paying sales taxes in cities different than where they live.
He explained if people do pay taxes, those dollars would be refunded to their own county. Albritton said he hopes it will help smaller communities. He said he is bringing this effort after the city of Tuscaloosa sued the state in an effort to keep more online sales tax revenue local…
