The Alabama Department of Human Resources is rolling out a major update aimed at better protecting SNAP benefits for families across the state.
Beginning Thursday, January 22, 2026, all EBT cards in Alabama will automatically block out of state and online transactions. According to a press release from Alabama DHR, the change is designed to reduce fraud and keep benefits where they belong, in the hands of Alabama families.

With this new system enhancement, EBT cards will default to a “Block High Risk Transaction” status. That means purchases will only be approved for in state, in person transactions unless the cardholder takes action to unlock their card. If someone needs to use their EBT card outside of Alabama or for an online purchase, they must first unlock it through the ConnectEBT mobile app, the ConnectEBT website, or by calling EBT Customer Service.
“We are extremely pleased to announce this new feature because it should curtail more of the electronic fraud that is stealing funds from eligible clients,” said DHR Commissioner Nancy Buckner, according to the press release. She added that the agency has spent the past year strengthening security measures with the help of its EBT card vendor to ensure benefits stay protected.
