Alabama lawmakers weigh cutting sodas and candy from SNAP benefits

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Alabama’s senate committee on finance and taxation have approved a bill that would cut sodas and candy from SNAP benefits.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 700,000 Alabamians are on SNAP as of Oct. 2025.

Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) is the sponsor of the bill that would restrict sodas and candy from being bought using SNAP.
