Ever been to an event that’s 85 million years in the making? That’s how long ago an asteroid struck the area we know as Wetumpka.
The collision made one heck of a dent. The impact crater is five miles across east to west, and seven miles across north to south.
“It’s a lot bigger than most people could comprehend,” said Andrew Stieb, chairman of the Wetumpka Impact Crater Commission. “A lot of people think they’re going to pull into town and look from the edge of a cliff and say, ‘Hey, this is the crater.’ That’s very much not the case… Thirty million square feet of land surface area. It’s massive. It’s absolutely massive. If you wanted to see it in its entirety, you’d have to do it from an aircraft.”…
