Bill could ease teacher shortage, open doors for Alabama veterans

A new bill is making its way through the legislative session that could soon become law. House Bill 306 aims to establish the Military Veteran Teaching Certificate, providing temporary teaching credentials to veterans.

The bill is set for a vote in the House on Tuesday. If it passes, it will proceed to Gov. Ivey’s desk for a signature and could take effect on Oct. 1.

Supporters believe this bill could help address teacher shortages while offering a new career path for veterans. To qualify, veterans must have at least 48 months of active-duty service and an honorable discharge or medical separation.
