MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Gov. Kay Ivey has scheduled the execution of Charles Lee Burton for March 12 for his role in the 1991 death of Doug Battle. Burton, 75, would be the first person put to death in Alabama this year.
Alabama plans to carry out the execution using nitrogen gas. The state executed five people in 2025, second only to Florida, which carried out 19 executions.
