New bill would require police to have probable cause before searching boats in Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala (WIAT) – Random boat inspections could be a thing of the past if Governor Kay Ivey signs Alabama HB254 into law.

“All this is doing is putting our vessels in line with the roadways,” HB254 Sponsor, Rep. Shane Stringer said.

If a police officer or a state trooper wants to pull a driver over, there must be probable cause that the driver is breaking the law. On the waters, that’s a different story. HB254 would require ALEA and local marine patrol to have probable cause before searching anyone’s vessel…
