Montgomery teacher follows father’s footsteps into physical education

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Meryles Gilbert grew up in Montgomery, and fell in love with sports after watching his father spend more than 25 years teaching physical education. Now, eight years into his own career with Montgomery Public Schools as a PE coach at Southlawn Elementary School, Gilbert is building on that foundation — one student at a time.

“I feel like I can have a great impact on their [lives] because I’m from here, and I know how things go around here for the most part,” Gilbert said. “We’ve made a home here and we love it.”

Gilbert played football at Carver High School and graduated in 2011 and never left Montgomery. He went on to attend Alabama State University. He now has a wife and three daughters, ages 5, 4, and 1, and the family still calls Montgomery home…
