A body found at the bottom of a California ravine nearly 50 years ago has been confirmed to be a missing Alabama woman.
Victoria Jean Hargrove, who was 29 at the time, went missing from her home in Opelika, Ala., on Jan. 28, 1980. A body was found by motorists in an unincorporated area of Riverside County near Palm Desert just three weeks after Hargrove went missing. Through DNA testing and forensic genetic genealogy databases, authorities recently confirmed the remains as hers.
While the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case as a homicide, the cause of death and the identity of the body could not be determined at the time, even with using fingerprinting and dental records, according to DNASolves.com.
