East Alabama doctor says mammogram misinformation is putting women at risk

AUBURN, Ala. (WRBL) — During Women’s Health Week, an East Alabama breast cancer specialist is sounding the alarm about a growing trend she says could cost lives: women avoiding mammograms because of misinformation they’ve seen online.

Dr. Lauren Thorington, a breast radiologist at East Alabama Medical Center’s Breast Health Center, says fears about radiation exposure from mammograms are becoming far more common in her exam rooms.

“A lot of patients are worried about the radiation dose,” Thorington said. “It’s a very tiny dose. Is there radiation? Yes, but it’s equivalent to flying in an airplane from New York to LA back to New York. So if you’re willing to get on that airplane, get your mammogram too.”…
