Dispensaries brace for Tennessee THC-A ban
On July 1, a new state law will take full effect and ban THC products with a concentration of 0.3% or higher. The change will force customers who currently rely on THCA for pain, anxiety and sleep to seek out-of-state alternatives and risk a Class A misdemeanor — or go without the remedies.
The law, formally known as Public Chapter 526, reclassifies THCA from a hemp-derived product to the precursor to THC. That’s because burning THCA creates THC through a process called decarboxylation, something policymakers did not initially understand when creating protocols for hemp use, according to the Tennessee Traffic Safety Office. When smoked, THCA products provide the same psychoactive effects as marijuana.
