Rutherford County will lose over $1 million in annual taxes by condemning land for a new $375 million jail and sheriff’s office, the property owner’s attorney contends.
Brentwood lawyer Joshua Denton, who represents the Werthan family in Atlanta, sent a July 24 letter to the Rutherford County Commission urging the elected officials to rescind a 13-8 vote from July 16 to obtain the 52 acres in question through an eminent domain condemnation court case.
The majority of the commissioners supported condemnation to replace an aging and overcrowded Rutherford County Adult Detention Center and sheriff’s office by building a new jail and law enforcement office campus.
