MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A McNairy County doctor has been suspended for five years after being accused of over-prescribing opioids and narcotics, “cloning” medical records and pre-writing prescriptions, according to the State of Tennessee Department of Health.
Barton Austin Chase III, MD, of Ramer, Tennessee, was accused of making the following violations:
- Unprofessional, dishonorable, or unethical conduct.
- Gross healthcare liability or a pattern of continued or repeated healthcare liability, ignorance, negligence, or incompetence in the course of medical practice.
- Violation or attempted violation, directly or indirectly, or assisting in or abetting the violation of, or conspiring to violate, any provision of this part or any lawful order of the board issued pursuant thereto or any criminal statute of this state.
- Prescribing controlled substances in amounts and for durations not advisable or justified.
- Prescribing controlled substances to a person addicted to controlled substance(s) without making a bona fide effort to cure the habit.
- Prescribing controlled substances to any person in violation of any law of the state of Tennessee or of the United States.
- Failure to observe board guidelines in prescribing controlled substances.
- Prescribing without proper documentation of history, physical exam, individualized therapeutic plan, and discussion of treatment options.
Chase is now on probation for at least five years, restricted from supervision of mid-levels for at least five years, and restricted from prescribing controlled substances for at least three years.
