MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS) – Members of the Rutherford County Commission’s Property Management Committee toured the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on Thursday (September 24th) to inspect severe overcrowding and facility conditions firsthand. Jail leadership met with Commissioners to review structural, mechanical, and technical challenges that affect daily operations for inmates and staff.
The original facility, which currently operates as the female annex, was constructed in 1988. A multistory addition was completed in 1998 to address capacity concerns, but overcrowding returned shortly after it opened. Built to hold approximately 550 inmates, the jail now houses roughly 1,050 people daily, with population peaks reaching up to 1,200.
Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) Deputy Chief Bernard Salandy noted that the 1998 addition lacked sufficient input from frontline staff. Salandy explained that planning for a new facility will gather feedback from employees across every level and experience tier to ensure better functionality and design.
