Murfreesboro police warn of kidnapping scam

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) – The Murfreesboro Police Department is asking the public to be mindful of a kidnapping scam going around the city.

Police said an apparent scammer is calling Murfreesboro residents claiming to have kidnapped a loved one, threatening violence, and demanding a ransom be paid for their release.

The Murfreesboro Emergency Communications 911 Center has reportedly received multiple calls from people reporting similar phone calls. In one case, a crying woman was even put on the phone asking for help before a man with a foreign accent took the phone and demanded a ransom be paid for her release or she’d be killed, according to investigators.

Police are urging residents to hang up the phone and contact the family member directly if they receive a call like this. To report the scam, call police at 615-893-1311 .
