‘He loved school’: Smyrna offers $6k in scholarships in honor of Blue Angel Pilot Jeff Kuss

SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) — Eight years after Blue Angels Capt. Jeff Kuss of Smyrna was killed in a crash during a training flight, his family is remembering his legacy with a scholarship.

“He was handsome, humble, humorous,” said Jeff’s mother Janet Kuss. “A great son, brother, dad, and husband. Just an all-around fun guy.”

Jeff died in a plane crash during the 2016 Navy Blue Angels training at the Great Tennessee Air Show in Smyrna.

Janet told News 2 when the family learned of his passing, all they could do was cling to each other.

“Fortunately, Eric, his brother, Michael, and I were all together when we found out,” Janet said. “We went to Eric’s house, and we just kind of stood in a huddle for hours, just speechless.”

The community in Smyrna rallied around the Kuss family, making them part of the Smyrna family.

In 2018, a retired Blue Angel aircraft and a replica of Jeff’s plane were placed across from the Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport to remember his life.
