1 dead, 1 injured after ‘serious’ Murfreesboro crash involving bicyclists

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) – A deadly crash involving a car and a group of bicyclists is under investigation in Murfreesboro, officials said.

According to the Murfreesboro Police Department , the “serious” crash took place at the corner of Joe Knight Drive shortly after 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Authorities said the preliminary investigation shows a sedan swerved, jumped a curb, and ran into the group of bicyclists — who were stopped on a sidewalk while waiting for a traffic light to change — at the intersection of Joe Knight Drive and Medical Center Parkway.

A man riding a recumbent bike — a four-wheel bike that allows someone to pedal in a seated position — was reportedly rushed to nearby Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, where he died. His identity has yet to be released.

As of 5:50 p.m., officials said another recumbent bike rider who was injured is listed in stable condition

The driver of the car was also brought to the hospital before being evaluated and released, but police said charges could be pending against the driver.
