Tornado Clusters: Where the most tornadoes have been recorded in Tennessee since 1950

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Some spots in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky seem to be tornado magnets. Some communities have seen multiple twisters blow through over the years.

Since 1950, Davidson County has experienced 58 tornadoes. Wilson County has had 55 tornadoes, Sumner County 52, and Rutherford County 45.

Over in West Tennessee, Shelby County has experienced 56 tornadoes since 1950.

The reason for these tornado clusters has little to do with meteorology. Besides the large size of these counties, their higher populations and modern-day communications have a lot to do with it.

“The more people with eyes on the sky reporting damage, the more likely we are to get a report,” said Ryan Husted.

Husted, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Weather Service, continued, “Tornadoes are up across the board and across the country probably because we have many more ways to report tornadoes, whether it’s social media, emails, phone calls—We get pictures now from chasers, the public, and our broadcast media partners. There’s just a lot more information.”
