Wilson County dog recovering after electrical fire destroys family’s home

WILSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Wilson County family’s dog is recovering after he was rescued from a blaze that destroyed their home.

The Legens family told News 2 the fire started with a freak electrical issue.

“Whenever the fire was happening, it’s almost just like you go into a panic mode,” Barkley Legens said.

Legens took News 2 inside his family’s home and showed off the outlet where the fire started. He said nothing was plugged in at the time.

“The home is one thing — it’s material. The dog was probably the hardest conversation,” Legens said.

According to the Wilson County man, the only one home when the blaze broke out was the family’s 9-year-old dog, Charles. When Legens came back with his kids and saw the smoke coming out the front door, he said he ran into the house to save Charles.

“He was laid out on the ground, just looked like he was barely breathing. We got him out to the front yard and then, as the police came, they had oxygen tanks, started getting on him immediately. He’s doing a lot better right now, but yeah, it was pretty scary,” Legens said.
