JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL)—The Department of Safety and Homeland Security reminded Tennesseans in a news release that the REAL ID Act of 2005 will take effect in less than six months.
The REAL ID Act of 2005 mandates that all individuals aged 18 and older must possess a REAL ID or another federally-issued photo ID, such as a passport, in order to enter specific facilities or board commercial flights within the United States. This requirement will take effect on May 7, 2025.
Federal law requires REAL ID applications to be completed in person, the release said. Those with a Tennessee driver’s license or ID can apply for a REAL ID at a Driver Services Center or participating County Clerk. Those without a Tennessee driver’s license must apply at a Driver Services Center.
