Rare cloud formation spotted in Tennessee

TRI-CITIES, Tenn. (WJHL) — NewsNation affiliate WJHL viewers captured stunning, rare clouds in the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee on Sunday.

The formations are called “undulatus asperatus,” which loosely translates to roughened or agitated waves, the National Weather Service (NWS) reports . They are more commonly referred to as “asperitas.”

The formation and its name were officially recognized in 2009, the NWS said, decades after the previous addition to the International Cloud Atlas of the World Meteorological Organization in 1951.
