NWS issues Hazardous Weather Outlook for region

MORRISTOWN – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Morristown has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for portions of southwest North Carolina, east Tennessee, and southwest Virginia, warning of strong winds and snow in higher elevations today and tonight.

Wind Advisories and Warnings

A High Wind Warning remains in effect for portions of the East Tennessee Mountains and adjacent foothills, while a Wind Advisory is in place for surrounding areas. The Wind Advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST today, with southwest winds of 10 to 25 mph and gusts up to 45 mph expected.

Gusty winds may blow around unsecured objects, potentially down tree limbs and cause a few power outages.

Rain and Snow in Higher Elevations

Rain is forecast to change over to snow in higher elevations tonight, generally at or above 3,000 feet. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected, particularly in areas such as the Smoky Mountains and Roan Mountain in Tennessee.

In addition, brisk westerly winds will drive wind chills into the teens in these locations, adding to hazardous conditions.
