New Year’s Eve storms cause power outages in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – Crews are already working to restore power after heavy storms hit the region Tuesday afternoon.

Officials with Appalachian Power said just before 4:30 p.m. that they had already restored power to nearly 4,000 customers. They say that at the peak of outages, nearly 12,000 customers were without power, two-thirds of which were in West Virginia, and as of just before 7 p.m., their outage map says that number is now down to 3,200 customers between West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee, with the majority, 2534 outages, in the Mountain State.

Appalachian Power officials say the heaviest hit counties they serve in West Virginia were Kanawha, Logan, Mingo, Ohio, Roane and Wayne counties.

According to Appalachian Power’s outage map , there are currently 188 outages in Boone County, 40 in Cabell County, less than five in Clay County, 42 in Fayette County, less than five in Jackson County, 76 in Kanawha County, 91 in Lincoln County, 401 in Logan County, less than five in Marshall County, 17 in Mason County, 10 in McDowell County, 10 in Mercer County, 465 in Mingo County, 52 in Ohio County, 46 in Putnam County, 42 in Raleigh County, 456 in Roane County, 19 in Summers County, 25 in Wayne County, and 550 in Wyoming County.
