Tennessee is expected to get some frigid weather in the new year.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration , a pattern change is expected to bring an arctic outbreak with high probabilities of below-normal temperatures for much of the eastern part of the country.
There is a small cell in the South that is particularly affected, and the Volunteer State is in it. Tennessee has a 90-100% chance of seeing below normal temperatures between Tuesday, Jan. 7, and Monday, Jan. 13.
Here’s what Tennesseans need to know.
How cold will it get in Tennessee?
According to Accuweather , the first bouts of the system will move into the region in the later part of next week, bringing a significant amount of arctic air into the Southeastern states.
“The coldest air of the season to date and dangerous wind chills are likely across many areas of the Southeast,” states the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center.
In the middle of the arctic air outbreak, temperatures may fall far below the historical average. In Tennessee, the average temperature in January ranges between about 50 degrees during the day to about 25 degrees at night.
