TVA prepares for Arctic blast, shares tips for conserving energy

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — As we gear up for another Arctic blast in our region, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is making sure the grids are prepared for the uptick in energy usage as people try to stay warm at home early next week.

“TVA has spent the fall preparing. We’ve invested about $430 million last year in winter readiness and summer readiness activities,” Scott Fiedler, a TVA spokesperson, told News 2.

According to officials, we generally use about 20% to 30% more power to heat our homes. The TVA has already seen those spikes, especially in the last few weeks.

“We’re coming off two major storms: Blair at the beginning of the month and Cora just last week, and Cora really tested our system. About 90% of our region was covered with snow, ice, or rain, so that put some strain on the grid, but it allowed us to test our procedures,” Fiedler explained…
