Riverdale senior Deyonna Lopez cried and held hands with people gathered around her while she watched as 14 inches of her hair hit the school’s gym floor.
“My great aunt died earlier this year from cancer and I wanted to do it for her,” she said. “A couple of weeks ago, my uncle died. For a lot of people, cutting hair is like getting rid of the bad memories and starting anew.”
Lopez was one of about 100 faculty, staff and students at the Rutherford County school to volunteer to surrender their hair for St. Baldrick’s Day on March 21 and raise more than $20,000 for cancer research. Every organization on Riverdale’s campus is involved in the event…
