Rutherford County Schools to consider adding metal detectors in all schools

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — The director of Rutherford County Schools has called for metal detectors in all district schools

Last week , the Health and Education Committee approved the request for funding for the $2.5 million weapon detection systems, which are pending school board approval.

The Director of Rutherford County Schools, Dr. James Sullivan, told the committee the decision to install metal detectors comes after two recent school safety issues — the January Antioch High School shooting and an Oakland High School student who was caught with a loaded gun at school over a week ago.

“As a[n] educator, that is something — honestly — I never thought that I would ever want in our schools,” Sullivan said. “I feel like that sets the wrong tone and the wrong purpose of what a school is. It’s an educational institution; however, we’re to the point that, as a director, I want to make sure our kids are safe.”…
