TN Senate to debate bill requiring medical examiners to test suspected mass shooters for drugs, check medical history

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Medical examiners in Tennessee could soon be required to investigate the medication history of suspected mass shooters under a new bill proposed by Sen. Rusty Crowe (R-Johnson City).

SB 1146 would require medical examiners to attempt to contact the doctor or mental health provider for someone suspected of committing a mass shooting that killed four or more people, to gather information on any medications they were taking, including psychotropic drugs. The examiner must also test the body for drugs and share that information with the University of Tennessee’s Health Science Center College of Pharmacy and the Department of Health.

The university would then required to study how the drugs interacted in the person’s system and submit quarterly reports to the Chief Clerks of the Senate and the House of Representatives…
