State, local groups and businesses turn runaway zebra into a meme

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — As the search continues for a missing pet zebra in Rutherford County, several state and local organizations have turned the animal into a meme.

On Saturday, May 31, the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning about a pet zebra that was running through traffic along both sides of Interstate 24, interrupting traffic. As of Monday evening, the zebra remains on the run.

The days-long search has turned the zebra into quite the online sensation, with several area businesses as well as Tennessee and Rutherford County businesses turning the zebra into an online meme. The zebra has “appeared” in social media posts from businesses like Martin’s Home and Garden, Deja Moo Springfield, Front Street Pub and Ralph’s Donut Shop.

At the state level, the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services used the zebra, calling him “Ed,” to post a reminder about taking a break from stress.

The City of Murfreesboro posted about “middle Tennessee’s most famous zebra” in a reminder about their ongoing Movies Under the Stars series. The Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce welcomed its newest member “Ed the Zebra.”
