Rutherford County Assessor pushes back against Mayor’s resignation call

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WZTV) — Rutherford County Assessor Rob Mitchell is rejecting a public call for his resignation made by County Mayor Joe Carr, saying the mayor overstepped his bounds and misunderstood the role of his office.

“The Assessor’s Office is an independently elected constitutional office. We do not take directives from the County Mayor,” Mitchell said in a written statement Friday. “The Tennessee Constitution establishes the Assessor as an independent office, elected directly by the people of Rutherford County to serve their interests in property assessment matters.”

The clash between the two elected officials has not been publicly detailed, but Mitchell said the matter should be resolved through formal legal channels rather than through what he called “political theater.”…
