‘It helps keep them safe’ | Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency warns against moving ‘abandoned’ fawns

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Although the animals may appear helpless at first sight, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is advising people against touching or moving fawns unless it’s absolutely necessary.

According to the agency, it often receives calls around this time of year about “abandoned” fawns. However, in most cases, these fawns are not abandoned but are just waiting for their mothers to return.

TWRA said it is completely normal for a doe to leave her fawn alone for several hours at a time in order to avoid attracting predators. The mothers do this because fawns are born scentless and instinctively lie still, which helps to keep them safe…
