MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tennessee lawmakers, during a press conference on Tuesday, June 10, said the health and safety of Southwest Memphis residents are at stake as they continue to press for answers about xAI’s proposed gas turbines.
Memphis Mayor Paul Young met with state legislators at Memphis City Hall to address mounting concerns over the facility’s environmental impact. The discussion centered around the 15 permanent gas turbines xAI has requested a permit for: equipment that lawmakers argue could worsen air quality in historically burdened neighborhoods near the facility.
Young called the meeting a step toward clarity, noting growing frustration among residents and misinformation surrounding the project. He said that currently the city has three air quality monitoring stations, but none are located near the xAI site in Southwest Memphis.
