Coffee County Commission Resolution to Abolish Constables Fails

On the agenda for the June 10, 2025 Coffee County Commission Meeting, was Resolution #2025-09 to Abolish the Constable Position. The Resolution read that “improvements in the capability, professionalism and efficiency of the Office of Sheriff regarding law enforcement and the service of civil process has made the office of Constable unneccesary in Coffee County”.

Laura Nettles, Commissioner for District 3 and Chairman Pro Tempore for the Commission, cited concern for the legal liability the County would bear regarding the actions of Constables. Nettles went on to say that the Constables do not have the same training that law enforcement officers are expected to maintain.

The Resolution need a 2/3 vote of the commission to pass. The vote did not pass with a vote of 8 yes votes from:
