We all have things in our lives that cause us stress. We all know how important it is for our health to eliminate stress, but that’s easier said than done. Exercise, meditation, and getting more sleep are some common recommendations, but you might need to take bigger steps. Sometimes, relocating to a new city might just be what you need, but where should you go?
How WalletHub Measured Stress Across the U.S.
WalletHub just released a report on the Most & Least Stressed Cities in America, so you can probably get some answers there. I can tell you that one place you may want to avoid is Memphis, TN, which has been ranked the country’s 5th most stressed state.
Memphis is a Hotspot for Health and Safety Stress
WalletHub assessed 182 cities using 39 key metrics across the following four stress-inducing dimensions (including Memphis’s rank in each):
- Work stress: 80th
- Financial stress: 8th
- Family stress: 9th
- Health & Safety stress: 1st (most stressed)
More Contributing Factors Behind Memphis’s Stress Rank
Here are two other stress-related metrics that contributed to Memphis being ranked so high. Memphis has the 4th lowest median credit score, and has the highest (1st) crime rate in the country.
Interestingly, Tennessee as a whole ranks high in stress, landing 6th among U.S. states for overall stress levels. Memphis is the only Tennessee city in WalletHub’s top 10, making its ranking especially noteworthy.
