Being ‘priced out’: Rising costs prompt Murfreesboro mayor’s housing survey

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WZTV) — As housing prices continue to soar across Middle Tennessee, Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland is turning to the public for answers. A recent Facebook post from the mayor, asking residents to weigh in on affordability, has now reached nearly 50,000 people, prompting a wave of passionate responses — and laying the groundwork for what could be long-term policy changes.

“We talk about affordability quite a bit,” McFarland said. “That’s something most Middle Tennessee communities are all dealing with.”

The mayor’s post laid out three simple questions:

  1. Are you in favor of increasing housing density to improve affordability?
  2. Would you support the construction of more apartments?
  3. Do you believe government intervention, like price controls, is necessary?
