Tennessee lawmakers debate loosening school time rules, paving way for 4-day weeks

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Tennessee lawmakers could consider giving school districts more freedom when it comes to instruction time requirements, allowing them to choose the length of the school days and weeks.

Currently, Tennessee law requires districts to meet at least 180 days per year and for at least 6.5 hours a day.

During the first meeting of the newly formed Advisory Committee on Innovations in K-12 Education, lawmakers and education officials weighed the pros and cons of changing the state’s instruction time requirement from minimum days per year to minimum hours per year.
