10-digit dialing starts next week for East Tennessee’s new 729 area code. Here’s what you need to know

East Tennessee will soon have another new area code, and it’s going to add three more digits to many people’s local calls.

Starting Aug. 5, people in upper and lower East Tennessee in the 423 area code region will move to 10-digit dialing and will need to dial a 423 or 729 area code to complete all local calls. Anyone who tries to dial seven digits without an area code will not be able to complete the call and will instead hear a message.

Then, starting on Sept. 5, new telephone lines in that region will be assigned the new 729 area code. People with the new area code will also need to dial 10 digits for local calls…
