4 men arrested following failed ATM theft in Murfreesboro that led to deadly shooting

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — Arkansas State Police arrested four men accused of trying to steal an ATM Friday morning from a Middle Tennessee gas station, where a fifth suspect was shot and killed by a customer.

The Murfreesboro Police Department initially reported three suspects backed a stolen pickup truck to the 7-Eleven Exxon on East Northfield Boulevard around 5 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1 and broke a window with a sledgehammer before trying to pull the ATM from its base with a guy wire. An armed customer inside the store reportedly opened fire, hitting one of the would-be thieves.

Officials identified the suspect who died at the scene as 23-year-old Tyrese Walder. Authorities said they interviewed the customer who shot Walder and released him pending further investigation.
