TELFORD, Tenn. (WJHL) — Shrinking cattle supply and increased demand have caused beef prices to rise over the past year.
According to the USDA Food Price Outlook, prices for beef and veal increased by more than 10% between 2024 and 2025.
“More and more farmers, producers are raising their own beef,” Mark Zinnanti, general manager of Appalachian Producers Cooperative in Telford, said. “They bring it here to be harvested and processed. So, it’s really good for us. It’s also good for the farmer in that his or her actual price of that beef, once they get at home, is considerably cheaper than what it would be in the grocery store.

“The other part for the farmer-producer that’s really good is if those individuals sell freezer beef, they can bring their animals here, have them processed under USDA inspection, and then provided they have the Tennessee Department of (Agriculture) permit and things that are required, they can then sell that freezer beef. It enables the farmer-producer to make a little bit more money off of his or her cattle and then helps out the consumers as well.”…
